What to look for when buying a new smartphone

Don’t buy based on megapixels alone. Focus on the features you will actually use for several years.

1. Software support

A phone that receives security updates for longer can remain useful and safer for years. Check the manufacturer’s update policy before buying.

2. Battery and charging

Battery capacity matters, but real-world efficiency matters too. Look for independent testing when possible and consider charging speed if you are often on the move.

3. Camera quality

Sensor size, image processing and stabilisation often matter more than headline megapixel numbers. Think about the photos you actually take.

4. Storage

Apps, photos and video quickly consume space. If the phone does not support expandable storage, choose a capacity that will comfortably last.

5. Total cost

Compare the outright phone price with the cost of your mobile plan and accessories. A cheaper phone is not always cheaper over its lifetime.
